Anti American Sentiments Hurt Pakistan’s Cause

By Wasiq Ali

The Washington Post of September 25, 2009 carries a news story about the rising anti-Americanism in Pakistan titled Anti-U.S. Wave Imperiling Efforts in Pakistan, Officials Say

As the story points out – “A new wave of anti-American sentiment in Pakistan has slowed the arrival of hundreds of U.S. civilian and military officials charged with implementing assistance programs, undermined cooperation in the fight against al-Qaeda and the Taliban, and put American lives at risk, according to officials from both countries.”

Those who have leaked the story have deliberately chosen to do so at a time when the Friends of Democratic Pakistan (FoDP) summit is going on.

Stories like these have been leaked by people who think they can harm President Asif Ali Zardari and Ambassador Husain Haqqani. However, what they fail to understand is that President Zardari and Ambassador Haqqani represent Pakistan and that in spreading such stories they are hurting Pakistan.

The international community is on the side of Pakistan and Pakistanis and wants to help them. We need trade, aid and assistance from our allies like the United States. The Kerry-Lugar bill which was just passed has increased American aid to Pakistan to $1.5 billion every year for the next five years. This is time to strengthen Pakistan’s relations with the United States and not to attack the relationship.

The WP story has an interview with America-hater Shireen Mazari who states “I definitely have concerns about the Americans’ intentions here, especially that they would like to get access to our nuclear assets. The U.S. mind-set is suspicious of strong Muslim states, and there is a certain imperial arrogance in their behavior that Pakistanis like me don’t like.”

The way that Shireen Mazari has given an interview very clearly shows us that it is her lobby and associates who have leaked this story. From their point of view they think they are hurting the PPP-led government and ‘scoring points.’

But from the point of view of the average Pakistani they are hurting his livelihood and the future of his children. If more economic assistance and investment comes into the country then there will be more jobs, better schools, improved infrastructure and higher pay.

Instead of attacking people like Ambassador Haqqani as being pro-American we actually owe him a huge thanks for using all the skills at his and his embassy’s disposal to improve the US-Pakistan relationship. As the WP story states “At the highest levels, bilateral cooperation is said to be running smoothly. President Obama and Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari met Thursday in New York with a gathering of Pakistan’s international ‘friends.’ The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Mike Mullen, meets regularly with his Pakistani counterpart, Gen. Ashfaq Kiyani.”

However, “just below the top, officials in Islamabad and Washington say, the relationship is fraught with mutual suspicion and is under pressure so extreme that it threatens cooperation against the insurgents.”

What this means is that the leaders of both countries realize that it is in their benefit to move ahead, the problems are more at the mid and mid-to-lower level officials. It is interesting that the WP story says that a recent Pew Research Center poll “found considerable support for the “idea” of working with the United States to combat terrorism.” This means that the average Pakistani is supportive of American assistance. The problem comes from conspiracy theorists, anti-Americanists like Shireen Mazari and others who want to rile people over issues without realizing that this is going to hurt the country in the long term.

Unfortunately it is not restricted to Shireen Mazari who speaks like this because of being a follower of Imran Khan a man without much depth, understanding or vision. He is the one who was also against The Operation in Swat on the premise that Pakhthoons are thare in the army. It was so ridiculous.

If a Pakhtoon is a terrorist or a thief or a dacoit and if the judge is a Pakhtoon will he not convict him? This is just to show how hollow and shallow the thought process is with Shireen Mazari.

Pervez Musharraf gave freedom to the Media which they did not deserve. Most anchors were sold out, as they say and all worked against him and America. Dr. Shahid Masood unarguably the King of Conspiracy Theories set in motion a thought process that favoured the terrorists one way or the other and pitched himself and his audience against the State Stand of Pakistan and America. He muddled up matters no ends.

Seeing his following every body wanted to compete and joined with similar ideas. The uneducated Hamid Mir followed suit, so did Talat Hussain, Javed Choudhry etc. not to talk of Waheed Hussain of Wagth News whish is a full baked terrorist channel. There are so many like these. You will find very few unbiased and balance journalists like Najam Sethi etc.

The result is, as it takes no effort whatsoever to listen to TV people started imbibing anti Pakistan State and anti American sentiments of the media. They never aired peoples wishes but their own in the name of what people want. If people’s wishes were to be ascertained some referendum had to take place it never did.

It is all a hotch potch now. They all hate America as it is fashionable to do so. You don’t find any balanced analysis by the media. And the guests that appear further aggravate matters. They mostly are least informed bloated with preconceived notions and biases. The American case is lost in the media. There is no chance ordinarily.

If at all America is to redeem it’s position it has to do big things and something really big and let people know about it. I have a few ideas that are as follows:

1 Help Pakistan solve the Kashmir problem democratically without a war so that Pakistan and Inda co-exist together like good neighbours prospering in peace together.
    2. Develop Afghanistan just as they developed Japan. Presently Afghanis have nothiung to loose. Then they will. Don’t now abandon Afghanistan to its fate as US did post Russia. Truely develop it.
    3. Apologise for klling 1.4 million Iraqis a number a 1000 Saddams could not have equaled.
    4. US has destroyed Iraq it must rebuild it. Rebuild it and restore it to the pre-invasion state.
    5. US has used over 70 vetoes to help Israel and now that era of unconditional support to the aggressor and usurper must stop. It is high time. That gives a bad name to USA. And let the world know that this one sided policy has stopped. Now on USA will side with the right and not a wrong.

If genuine measures are not taken there is no hope. Right now US is only taking and taking without giving any thing and asking Pakistan to do more. It is just like getting all the concessions from The late Yaser Arafath.

Doling out little money for the war on terror will never be counted in US favour. It just goes into some individual pockets in civlian regimes. Every one knows the reputation of Mr. Zardari. His notoriety reaches the destinaiton well before he does.

And the problem is, he is asking for money without any development plans. So the world is skeptical. If he had had plans to do something for Pakistan he would have gone to them and said that they have a land ceiling plan in place restricting land ownership so that more and more people have land and now the requirement is water and they need to build a thousand dams both large and small. For which the world would fund. They could make Pakistan the Bread Basket of the world.

He could go an tell them he wants to develop Mykolach land in Karachi and make it somethng better than Disney Land, he wants say $ 500,000,000 to design it to International Standards and build Hotels, Road and Rail Network for it. Above all provide Law and Order which is non-existant now. Such projects will earn foreign exchange for Pakistan. The world would fund such ventures with aid, loan and investment. No such plans are in place.

He could go and tell the world he has a plan to make Pakistan the Center of Learning and Education and make it a top School and University destination for the world. The world community would fund it. Show Vision and ideas don’t ask money for nothing. Begging bowl is going to do harm than good.

He muddled up matters no ends. There was an appeasement of religious parties who didn’t help matters.

Seeing his following every body wanted to compete and joined with similar ideas 24×7 for years now. If at all America is to redeem it’s position it has to do big things and something really big and let people know about it. It has to prove its sincerety with people other than those in Israel. I have a few ideas that are as follows:

1 Help Pakistan solve the Kashmir problem democratically without a war so that Pakistan and Inda co-exist together like good neighbours prospering in peace together.
    2. Develop Afghanistan just as they developed Japan. Presently Afghanis have nothing to loose. Then they will. Don’t now abandon Afghanistan to its fate as US did post Russia. Truely develop it before and after you get out. DO NOT ABANDON IT.
    3. Apologise for klling 1.4 million Iraqis a number a 1,000 Saddams could not have equaled.
    4. US has destroyed Iraq it must rebuild it. Rebuild it and restore it to the pre-invasion state. It is the responsibility of US and UK.
    5. US has used over 70 vetoes to help Israel and now that era of unconditional support to the aggressor and usurper must stop. It is high time. That gives a bad name to USA. And let the world know that this one sided policy has stopped. Now on USA will side with the right and not a wrong.

The unconditional support of Israel and giving no helping hand in solving the Kashmir problem is like helping the terrorists. And you have invaded Afghanistan, there was some justification. You invaded Iraq there was not justification. So you are cannot be viewes as just people. Annul that image.

If genuine measures are not taken there is no hope. Right now US is only taking and taking without giving any thing and asking Pakistan to do more. People are saying no more. In such things money does not much count. It is just like getting all the concessions from the late Yaser Arafath.
